BPerryFilms X Dean College

My name is Bobby L. Perry (CEO of BPerryFilms & The Artistic Creator Academy™). I am a Dean College Alumni Class of 2015 and graduated from Cambridge College in one year with my Masters Of Management at age 22.  I identify as an Artistic Creator who has a passion for storytelling through the Arts & Media Marketing Production field. When it comes to my identity I always said I am a Black American who has a purpose and intention to be successful in all aspects of my life. I was asked to do a presentation on the Black Experience but I thought it was too broad and everyone’s experience would be different. For me, I didn't think there was a need to label ourselves other than being our definition of leaders in our niche of choosing. It took me a long time to find myself and appreciate all the highs and lows I faced when growing up.

Launching BPerryFilms on June 7th, 2021 paid homage to my grandmother’s legacy of storytelling and bringing the community together. She passed at age 100 but I was happy to share a bonding experience with her by documenting her life story through film in the Documentary called “1921”. BPerryFilms is an Arts and Media Marketing production company that works with Small Businesses, Performing Artists, and Content Creators to market their brand and services through digital marketing services. I transferred the skills I learned in the field and the classroom which had opened so many doors for me  At Dean, I got the opportunity to build a community with so many passionate and innovative people that all I knew was creation. I left this school with so much wisdom that all I could do was just compose Art. Now I had to apply all the lessons learned from being a Dancer/Choreographer/ Philanthropist/ Activist/ Scholar I had to create a phrase that embodied everything encompassed and that was an “Artistic Creator” a person who has mastered their art medium of choice and has given back in contribution to their community and inspires others to do the same. Now I operate 2 companies under one umbrella BPerryFilms & The Artisic Creator Academy™. These companies bring back education to the arts through digital marketing and filmmaking services providing resources such as Coaching, Podcasting, Courses, and Copywriting to the full front.

My journey in the entertainment industry started at age 3 when I started in dance after seeing  Boston Ballet's performance of “The Nutcracker” for the first time. It was a blend of the costumes, lighting, sound, and body movements that made me feel like I was in a dream state of mine. At that age all I could understand was storytelling and where it could transport me. I attended my first Performing Arts school Elliot Church School where I studied Musical Theater. Finding my voice on stage was challenging because I was so shy but on stage, I felt the most confident. At age 8 I had the opportunity to see The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater For the first time. The piece that caught my attention the most was “Revelations”. The sections that touched me the most were “Wade In The Water” and “Sinner Man.” The level of stamina, power, musicality, and resilience showed me the power of Black People uniting. It brought me to a place where I saw empowerment for the first time reading the room and seeing everyone in the audience connecting to the piece of art. After the show, I immediately got into Choreography and wanted to set up my productions. At this time we called this Entrepreneurship. I would use the money I made from doing chores to pay for costumes, lighting, set design, music and compose my original work. I would charge my family and friends at prices of $10 for Children and $20 for Adults. They knew by then I was serious about my craft.

After my self-made performance, My Uncle Rich asked me “What do I want to do when I grow up? I told him “I wanted to be just like Aliey.” He said “How are you doing to do that when you are shy? You can’t be a Shy dancer.” That message stuck with me and motivated me to work harder in my craft. When I got older and was attending Boston Arts Academy as a Dance Major I got to work with many choreographers and got to train at many venues. As a business owner, it is important not to forget where you came from. I started getting involved with helping the community. I wanted to bring back what real art looks like to students who don’t have the opportunity to experience what I have experienced.

Going through these experiences in the Arts & Educational industry has helped me grow as a person and as a scholar. People often ask me what my niche is and my response would be “Storytelling through different mediums.” Being in the entertainment field for 20+ years allowed me to go on a journey to find myself and my purpose or calling. Meeting people like Gloria Van Scott, Bill T. Jones, John Layer, DMC, and Ruth  E Carter has helped me shape the way I view my perspectives in my personal and professional life.
